River Oaks is one of (if not the) oldest neighborhood(s) in Houston. It's an exclusive area which you'll see by the size of the homes. Drive through and admire the vastness of it all. If you're here during Christmas, it's one of the best viewing areas for Christmas lights.

Grocery stores

A Whole Foods Market is within walking distance and offers a coffee/tea bar, groceries, hot bar, salad bar, sushi, an assortment of ready-made food and a bar inside the store with wine and beer. It's a great stop to stock up on groceries or grab a quick bite and/or drink.

This is the newest grocery store in the area. There's a coffee/tea bar inside that also sells quick bites. Prices on groceries are lower here than Whole Foods but the quality is still great. It's a little tougher to walk to but if you want to save some money on groceries, this is a good option.

Easy-to-get-to restaurant

Emmaline is an upscale casual restaurant that's within walking distance from the house. They have brunch on weekends from 10-3, have a nice bar and patio seating. The food is good but not the best in Houston. Go there if you're looking for a nice place with good ambiance.

Food scene

Go here if you want really amazing BBQ. Period. Get there early. When they sell out, they close their doors. And people don't mind that their business model is like that. They just know to get there early. It's that good. Try anything. You'll love it. Including slices of cake the size of your face. Oh, and they have Topo Chico. What more do you need?
