The historic centre of Valparaiso. If you continue towards the ocean from the plaza you’ll get to the buzzing, chaotic port area. There's a small touristic market here and small boats offer tours.

This is well away from the touristic centre of Valparaiso but worth it to watch the lively colony of sea lions just metres away from the shore and great views of Valparaiso's hills from the sea. There's also a beach and a fish market nearby (caleta portales).

TO GET THERE: Take the 612 bus outside our building to Viña centre (30-35 min). Walk to the beach (10-15 min).
This small beach town has a white sand beach and lots of restaurants. It fills up in summer and is quiet the rest of the year. Walk north along the coastline to the marine reserve, where you'll see sea lions (lobos marinos) and lots of sea birds, or walk south all the way to Viña.

If you can't ride on an "acensor" to avoid climbing back up the hill on foot, Uber and "colectivos" are a great option.

Best 1/2 day city walk
From our apartment, you can do an excellent city loop on foot which avoids most climbing and fits in the best of Valparaiso’s colorful neighborhoods and street art. Start by walking along av. Alemania towards La Sebastiana, and then head downhill until the Museo a Cielo Abierto. Explore the area, maybe have a coffee, and then take Asensor “Espíritu Santo” (100 CLP) down to Av Condell. Walk along until Plaza Anibel Pinto and then go up Asensor “Reina Victoria”. From here, explore Cerro Alegre and then continue back along Av. Alemania past Plaza Bismarck to arrive home.
