The coastal path stretches round the island and is easily accessible from Skerries - just walk down the hill, turn left onto the first track and you are there! Turn right at the beach and go past Church Bay towards Carmel head to see the natural stone arch and world war 2 fortifications on this wild and lonely part of the island. You can often see seals, cormorants and other wild life

This is one of Anglesey’s best kept secrets. Park by the bridge to walk onto the shore of the calm and tranquil inland sea. Safe for kids to paddle, kayak etc and with stunning scenery and wild life. Great for fishing and usually totally deserted!

This opencast Roman copper mine, used intermittently throughout history looks like a lunar landscape. Winding tracks give the most amazing views - all the way to the Isle of Man on clear days. It is like nowhere else on earth! Combine it with a trip to the museum in Amlwch which gives further information about the history of mining in the area

If you are a national trust member, this property is well worth a visit (even if you aren’t it is still very good, but a bit pricey for a family day out. It’s situated on the other side of the island so is quite a long drive but has a great cafe. There is a lot of walking once you get there as the house is a long way from the car park but the gardens are beautiful and it has a tree house in the grounds

You won’t find another one like this in the British Isles. It’s a a group of 4th century Roman limestone huts. There is a nice circular walk taking in the old chapel (pictured) as well. It can get quite muddy in winter so you might want to bring wellies!

We took our grumpy teenager here and she loved it so much she has insisted on dragging visitors back every time. Learn more about how the unique Anglesey sea salt is manufactured with the opportunity to taste! Excellent although pricey gift shop on site as well as a cafe. Very close to sea zoo and not too far from Plas Neuadd and Hootons farm shop if you want to fill up a day that side of the island. Booking strongly advised.

Fantastic boat trips from Menai bridge along the Menai straight or Holyhead (less often) to Skerries lighthouse. Booking is essential and trips (especially from Holyhead) are dependent on suitable weather. Not for the faint hearted as they really throw the boat around!

Narrated cruise from the pier at Beaumaris out to Puffin island. You can often see seals and puffins at the right time of year. There are usually spaces available to book on the day, but in busy summer holidays you may need to hang around Beaumaris for a few hours before a place is free (see Beaumaris entry to realise this is no hardship!)

Half finished castle with walks along the crumbling walls and the odd dungeon to explore. A beautiful restored chapel has modern stained glass and there is an interesting audio visual presentation. It is managed by Cadw and I think there may be an app you can download for an audio tour - check with reception

Транспорт

Little public transport locally but frequent London trains

There isn’t much local transport, but a cross country walk to the local village connects you with the bus service to Tesco Holyhead (change for buses into town) and the county town of Llangefni. Plan your visits by downloading the Travelline Cymru app. There are frequent trains across North Wales to Euston via Chester and Crewe - useful for connecting to anywhere in the country. It’s usually worth going to Holyhead to get the train as the fast trains don’t stop at Valley. Explore a little further afield by taking the ferry to Dublin, but make sure you take appropriate ID
Обычаи и культура

Language and customs

Anglesey has traditionally been a Welsh speaking area, but has seen a lot of inward migration from the rest of the UK in recent years. People will always be able to speak to you in English, but will appreciate a “diolch” (thank you) or “Bore da” (Good morning). If locals speak Welsh to each other in front of you they aren’t being rude or talking about you - it’s their native language.
