Also called Madonna del Mare. Known as the symbol of Opatija, this one-time cemetery of a girl of stone was erected in 1956 on the promontory front. The site originally had the sculpture “Madonna Del Mare” which was constructed in 1891 by Croatian sculptor Rathausky from Graz. It was demolished by a storm and a new statue was created later.

The historical garden “American gardens” is a valuable non-material cultural property which was put under preventive protection on 11 April 2016. It is situated on a terrace-like terrain above the conjunction of Rakovčeva Street and Nova cesta (very close to Villa Tomic and Maris apartment). Considering the composition, the materials, the ornaments and communication, the gardens are a valuable example of Modernism with elements of historicism. The American gardens were built in the 1st half of the 20th century, in honour of Hilda von Hortenau, originally from Opatija, by her husband, the Hungarian Mihaly Pal Kuczor. The gardens owe their name to the continent where Kuczor created his business empire by selling Szegedi paprika. The gardens have terrace like landform, with beautiful view on the Kvaerner bay. Since the gardener's house was built way before all other edifices, there is an obvious and much expressed sense and understanding of landscape architecture and horticulture. http://www.parkovi-opatija.hr/en/american_gardens

The museum is headquartered in the former Governor's Palace, a historicist edifice and protected cultural monument. The Governor's Palace was constructed in 1896 and designed by Alajos Hauszmann, one of the foremost Hungarian architects during the time when Rijeka was under Hungarian rule. Today, the palace houses the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral, which was established in 1961 and comprises maritime, historical and cultural, ethnographic and archaeological departments. Some of the original items from the Governor's Palace, such as furniture and artisan craft-work, have been preserved and exhibited in salons on the first floor. The permanent exhibition of the museum provides an interactive and modern platform for showcasing the long, rich and tumultuous history and culture of living in the area of what is today Primorje-Gorski Kotar County from prehistoric times to the present day. http://www.visitrijeka.eu/What_To_See/Museums_and_Collections/The_Maritime_and_History_Museum_of_the_Croatian_Littoral_Rijeka

The Natural History Museum located within the Nikola Host Park was the first regional museum in the Rijeka area, founded in 1876 when Doctor Joseph Roman Lorenz designed its concept in accordance with Vienna’s Naturhistoriches Museum. Initially the collection was an integral part of the City Museum, but since 1945 it has operated as an independent institution with rich holdings at its current location, within which there was a zoo and an aquarium until the 1960s. http://www.visitrijeka.eu/What_To_See/Museums_and_Collections/Natural_History_Museum_Rijeka

The cave of Lokvarka was discovered in 1912. Since the introduction of electricity in 1935 and the later construction of iron stairs, the cave has become an increasingly important local tourist attraction. Due to its extraordinary beauty and abundance of cave formations, this cave has been declared a nature monument. Today, the cave of Lokvarka is one of the largest caves in Croatia that is open to the public. With a professional tourist guide, visitors can admire four galleries. The others have not been fully explored and represent a challenge for speleologists and other enthusiasts in search of new discoveries. The cave has a constant air temperature of 6.5°-8°C, which means that a visit during the summer months is very refreshing. http://www.gorskikotar.hr/en/discover_gorski_kotar/natural_attractions/caves

SPECIAL GEOMORPHOLOGICAL RESERVE "Vrajži prolaz" and "Zeleni vir" - Skrad The area of Zeleni vir was declared a nature reserve in 1962. The excursion area, which is located 302 metres above sea level, can be reached from several directions. Zeleni vir is a powerful spring at the bottom of a shallow, spacious cave. Above the entrance, a picturesque waterfall crashes down the vertical 70-metre-high cliffs, creating a glittering water curtain. The second attraction in this area is the 800-metre-long canyon of Vrajži prolaz ("Devil's Passage"). Through this narrow gorge, which is approximately two metres wide, a mountain stream called Jasle flows among the hundred-metre-high rocks. The water has been flowing here for millennia, making its way through the stone, shaping this stunning landscape that leaves a strong impression on every visitor. At the end of the gorge, there is another tourist attraction: a cave called Muževa hižica. This is open to visitors to a depth of 200 metres. A deeper tour requires proper equipment and good caving skills. http://www.gorskikotar.hr/en/discover_gorski_kotar/natural_attractions/protected_landscapes

STRICT RESERVE The rocks of White and Samarian Rocks The rocks of White rocks (Bijele stijene) and Samarian rocks (Samarske stijene) are the only strict reserve in the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar. The area is protected by the strictest regulations. In Croatia, there is only one other area with such a protection regime: Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi on Mount Velebit. In the strict reserve, everything is subordinated to the goal of preserving the unspoiled nature. A permit from the relevant ministry should be obtained even for group visits with the aim of education or research. Due to the natural wilderness and inaccessible karst terrain with its numerous sinkholes, rocks and stone towers, the area of Bijele stijene and Samarske stijene is impassable off the marked trails. In fact, visitors are not even permitted to deviate from the trails. It is precisely because of its wildness and inaccessibility that this area has preserved its pristine nature, which leaves a deep impression on every visitor. http://www.gorskikotar.hr/en/discover_gorski_kotar/natural_attractions/protected_landscapes

A mere few kilometres from Postojna Cave, the Karst world offers an unforgettable experience in the fairytale world of knights. The impregnable medieval marvel has been perched in the middle of a 123-metre-high cliff for more than 800 years. Behind the largest cave castle in the world, there is a network of secret tunnels, from where the knight Erazem of Predjama would set out on his plundering expeditions. This is where the Mirna River meets the ancient richness of water mills connects the land and the water in expectation of return. This is where the giants restt. Kotli was once the leading economic village of the Hum area- Humština, with well-known millers and tailors. The water mill has been preserved to this day. Today Kotli is a protected rural complex with preserved courtyards, outer staircases, arched passages and picturesque chimneys. The company “Aura proizvodi” in Buzet, Istria, produces exclusive traditional products such as brandies, jams and other traditional products made of wild herbs and wild fruits picked in an ecologically clean environment on the slopes of the Chicharija mountain far from roads and inhabited settlements. Starting from production for our own needs, we have developed into a family company putting emphasis primarily on the quality of our products. In the Aura distillery which extends at more than 600 m2 of unique interior, you can see the brandy and jam production process. It is interesting that the visitor can see and experience the entire production process – from fruit fermentation, distillation in a handmade copper cauldron, fruit maceration, aging of brandies up to filling, labelling and packaging. Beside the production part, there is also the shop and the tasting room where we receive groups of visitors and individual guests. SUMMER 01.05.-30.10. MON.-SUN. 09-20 h WINTER 01.11. – 30.04.
