Food Scene

This pizza place is out of the way, but we highly recommend it. It is hidden at the back of the house-don't be discouraged when you first see it. It is located on the other side of town towards Chetumal. Remember to say hi to Margot – the owner’s very friendly Italian Mastiff who guards the kitchen’s entrance.

Not a restaurant, not completely street food, but somewhere in between :) For a place where locals eat local food: Don Honorio – street tacos and tortas. Made of Cochinita Pipil, lechón and Poc-Chuc also called “Asada” by locals. Open Tue-Sun 6:30 am – 2:00 pm. It is close to the house, just two blocks down the road which leads to “el centro” (downtown). It is a great place to pick up lunch and bring it back to the house.

Great Spanish food - Tapas, Paella, Fideua. The owner is a lot of fun to talk to. Make sure to try the Octopus "a la gallega".

This place is amazing. It is inside the reserve (on the other side of the beach) so it feels in the jungle. The menu is very limited but everything is great. This is place for a special diner.

Ice cream. Italian style. It used to be made on premises, but they had to move to a place with more space a few blocks away. It is great! Locals and tourists love it.

Getting Around

Tulum's bus station. With runs to Cancun's airport, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Merida, Coba and Chiapas among others. Make sure to check out their website for schedules and costs. https://www.ado.com.mx/ado2/ They are pretty reliable though they might run a few minutes late sometimes.

Essentials

The place to do your main grocery shopping. It is walking distance from the house and you can grab a cab right out their door to haul your shopping. Plenty of parking if you bring your car or bike. There are also ATMs from several Mexican banks inside.

Parks & Nature

Beach. Caribbean. Need I say more? :) Since it is a reserve parking can be complicated as well as having access to basic services. There are a few restaurants, but most people bring their drinks and snacks with them, as well as their towels, beach chairs and umbrellas.

This is one of the main beach entrances from the road. There are signs on the outside and parking area though it can get crowded. Once you get to the beach simply walk a few meters to either your left or right and you can reduce the crowds.

Sightseeing

These are the famous ruins which stand by the sea. The site is relatively small but having the backdrop of the Caribbean sea makes it worth visiting. From the house the main entrance on the road is a short bike ride away and you can also enter through the road that leads to the beach (and you avoid paying parking this way). The first parking lot is a tourist trap; if you drive ahead a few yards you will start seeing other parking lots that are cheaper - and sometimes even closer- to the main entrance. The site closes at 5.

Drinks & Nightlife

Mexican food. Good drinks. One of our favorite spots. Don't forget to try the sister restaurant right next to it "La Querida".
