Tattoo Parlor
“The brick-paved, heritage-hugging neighborhood where 19th-century Vancouver began has seen a cool wave of bars, restaurants and boutiques opening in recent years. But rather than building afresh, these independent businesses have restored and revitalized some of the city's oldest structures. The former skid row 'old town' area is now a picturesque and popular balance of old and new; just ask the jaunty bronze statue of John 'Gassy Jack' Deighton in Maple Tree Sq, guarding the site where he built his first pub way back in 1867.”

Science Museum
“Under Vancouver's favorite geodesic dome (OK, it's only one), this ever-popular science showcase has tonnes of hands-on galleries and a cool outdoor park crammed with rugged fun (yes, you can lift 2028kg). Inside, there are two floors of brilliant educational play, from plasma balls to whisper dishes. Check out the live critters in the Sara Stern Gallery, the bodily functions exhibits in the BodyWorks area, then fly over a city on the virtual-reality Birdly ride ($8 extra).”

“Granville Island is packed with enticing backstreet studios and artsy little nooks, but the brimming Public Market lures everyone who comes here like a foodie-themed siren song. From pyramids of glistening fresh fruit to drool-triggering deli counters that inspire a picnicking approach to life, it's a taste-tripping wander for browsers as well as locals dropping in for their regular shop. Add a seat at the shoreline plaza outside, complete with cheery buskers and beady-eyed seagulls, and you've found what may be Vancouver's best afternoon out.”

“The water taxi itself is already amazing. In the 1970’s, Granville Island began its successful transformation from an industrial wasteland to one of the most beloved public spaces in Vancouver. As Vancouver’s premier artistic and cultural hub, located in an urban, waterfront location and steeped in a rich industrial and maritime heritage, this unique destination attracts millions of visitors each year from Vancouver and around the world. The charm of Granville Island lies in its unexpected mix of uses. The famous Public Market, open daily from 9 am to 7 pm, is home to more than 50 independent food purveyors and contributes to the Island’s appeal as a renowned culinary destination. In the Net Loft Shops and Railspur District, many of Canada’s best artists and designers can be found. Granville Island is home to many cultural venues and hosts numerous performing arts and cultural festivals year-round.”

Hockey Arena
“Rogers Arena is an indoor sports arena located at 800 Griffiths Way in the downtown area of Vancouver, British Columbia. Opened in 1995, the arena was known as General Motors Place (GM Place) from its opening until July 6, 2010, when General Motors Canada ended its naming rights sponsorship and a new agreement for those rights was reached with Rogers Communications. Rogers Arena was built to replace Pacific Coliseum as Vancouver's primary indoor sports facility and in part due to the National Basketball Association's 1995 expansion into Canada, when Vancouver and Toronto were given expansion teams.”

“Yaletown was once the Western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway, but the area’s more recent reinvention dates back to 1986 when the waterfront along the north of False Creek was host to many of the venues when Vancouver hosted the World’s Fair. Since then that land, along with the warehouse district adjoining it have been transformed into one of the city’s chicest neighbourhoods, filled with residential loft spaces, sidewalk cafes, cool restaurants, unique shopping, and leafy parks. Sitting along the south side of the downtown Vancouver peninsula, Yaletown is bordered by Homer Street, Robson Street and False Creek.”

“I don't know how many dozens of beers this place has on tap (50+). Great rotating beer lists, loads of locals to try, and very good food mixed with friendly service. The renovated former salt building is a great adaptive reuse of an iconic architectural building in an area that's largely been de-industrialized. This is a good place for kids, too.”

“Watch the trains go by in a Heritage building with 50 taps of local & imported craft beers, plus a menu of locally sourced food. Since summer 2006, owners Raya Audet & Nigel Springthorpe have been quietly turning the Alibi Room into the place for local craft beer on tap. We have become a true Free House, pouring guest beers from the lower mainland, across the province and beyond. Head chef Greg Armstrong has added an understated sophistication to our very accessible menu. The menu reflects a strong desire to provide familiar, comforting dishes with an emphasis on quality ingredients. All of our meat, fish & poultry are sourced locally, ocean friendly, naturally raised and free run.”
