“Formerly a car repair warehouse, this is now a place where eight local artists have their workshops. More than that, though, hundreds of artisans receive training and make connections through the GoDown programme. It’s in the industrial area, with colourful graffiti on the walls. I like to visit the workshop of Michael Soi and pick up one of his famous tote bags. Each one is hand-designed and unique. You can just rock up to the GoDown Arts Centre during the day and wander between the workshops, chat with the artists, learn more about their work and inspirations and, of course, purchase some of their incredible pieces!”

“Banana Hill is a contemporary African art gallery that’s almost overwhelming—there’s so much to choose from and the paintings are stacked up like dominoes. They also hang paintings on the walls outside. I love some of the artists they feature there, like Paul Onditi, who explores African issues in a contemporary way. If you’re looking to purchase African art, this is definitely the place to come, simply because there’s so much choice all under one roof. ”

“Located right in the heart of Nairobi City next to Nyayo House is The Nairobi Gallery. It is housed in the Old PC’s (provincial commissioner) office building. Built in 1913, it was referred to as ‘Hatches, Matches and Dispatches’ because of the births, marriages and deaths that were recorded here.”

“This private home and boutique hotel is a real national treasure. During the day, the public is invited to come and see the private collection of African-heritage items and buy handmade goods ranging from jewellery to historical carvings. It’s an important piece of Kenyan history that’s working to preserve our culture. If you call and book in advance, you can visit for lunch—they have a great chef—and even use the swimming pool.”

“Housed in the old Bank of India building, the National Archives spotlights Kenyan tribal culture as well as the country's art, history, and politics. The main floor gallery displays historical documents and a collection of photographs. Paintings and artifacts from the collection of Joseph Murumbi, one of Africa's most famous collectors, dominate the exhibits. The second floor houses more art, a display of postage stamps, and the National Archives reading room, which is used for personal and professional projects.”

“Art Space Kenya is a relatively new gallery with amazing curators. I love it because every time I go there I discover new Kenyan artists. It’s minimalistic and clean inside to allow the artwork to stand out, and they have sessions where you can meet the artists. The whole experience is very beautiful. Check out the toilets! They have a blackboard wall where you can write your thoughts. It has musings on it from everyone who’s ever visited, which is pretty cool to see.”

Furniture / Home Store
“Down the road from our shop, this gallery is based in the owner’s home. Louise makes amazing furniture from old boats, and she travels North Africa and the Middle East sourcing carpets, cushions, and other items for her store. Her collection is really high-end. It’s pricey, but a good value for the quality. Louise tends to stock larger pieces of furniture—not exactly suitcase size!—but you can always arrange to have something shipped if you love it. Even if you’re not planning to buy, her shop is worth a visit just for inspiration.”

“The Nairobi Art Centre is set in a cottage in a pretty suburb of Nairobi. Both adults and kids come to take art classes in the open garage. On a sunny day, it’s nice to book a painting class with friends and get creative. They provide wine during the class, which is a nice addition! After your art class, be sure to take your creations home with you!”
