“Without a doubt the most famous church in Milan, Santa Maria delle Grazie is known for housing one of the most beautiful masterpieces ever made, the painting of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci painted the Last Supper in the refectory of the monastery, now called “Cenacolo” in reference to the masterpiece. Thousands of tourists come every year to admire this painting representing the last meal of Jesus Christ.”

“One of the most ancient churches in Milan, it was built by St. Ambrose in 379–386, in an area where numerous martyrs of the Roman persecutions had been buried. The first name of the church was in fact Basilica Martyrum. The church is mostly built in brickwork of different origins and colors, with parts of stone and white plastering. The current Romanesque church was begun around 1080.”

“This unique monastic complex is located just south of Milan in a little village surrounded by the green. It is one of the city's most important Cistercian monasteries and a place well-beloved by Milanese. Once inside, you can admire its beautiful paintings and frescos, created by famous artists, and be dazzled by the amazing XIV century original cloisters. The monastery also produces its own liqueurs, honey and health products, which are sold in the shop located in the ancient refectory and make for great and unique souvenirs! Tips : The fastest way to reach the monastery is by car. Otherwise, take Metro Line 3 (Yellow Line) and alight at Corvetto, then take bus #77 to Abbazia di Chiaravalle. Guided tours are organized mainly on Sundays. Check the website for the opening hours. Look out for the commemorative stone showing a stork holding a pastoral staff in its beak. A beautiful floral carpet ("Infiorata") is prepared by the monks with the help of parishioners for the feast of Corpus Christi each year. Plan to stay: 1-2 hours”

“A first church devoted to St. Michael Archangel was built on the location of the Lombard Palace chapel (to this period belongs the lower section of the bell tower), but it was destroyed by a fire in 1004. The current construction was begun in the late 11th century (crypt, choir and transept) and was completed by 1155. The vaults of the nave, originally with two grossly squared groin-vaulted spans, were replaced in 1489 by the design of master architect Agostino de Candia[1] in four rectangular spans, and the structure was created by his father the renown Pavia master mason Iacopo da Candia[2]. The basilica was the seat of numerous important events, including the coronations of Louis III (900) and Frederick Barbarossa (1155), among the others”
