“Tower Records was given an extensive overhaul in late 2012 that increased its whopping 5,000 square metres of floor space. There’s now a bookstore and a decent café on the 2nd floor, the music sections now give prominent placement to back catalogue stock as well as new arrivals, and there’s a video streaming venue called Tower Revolve Project in the basement, plus extra space for live performances. Venue name: Tower Records Shibuya Address: 1-22-14 Jinnan, Shibuya-ku Tokyo Opening hours: Daily 10am-11pm (Tower Records Cafe until 11.30pm)”

“A two-story shop in Shibuya that opened up a couple of years ago, it’s very representative of the current renewed interest in the LP format. As well as secondhand music, they have reissued analog recordings and rarely seen new products. They spotlight a wide variety of styles and also sell analog equipment and books, among other goods. They often hold live events on the first floor, mostly shows by J-pop idol groups with autograph sessions afterward. Upstairs, they have special DJ sessions. Check online to see what’s happening. ”

Record Shop
“My feeling about this shop is that people with a love for music and for the street in general are going to be able to find something cool to take home with them. The shop has new vinyl releases, of course—a lot of solid hip-hop from Japan and elsewhere—but they also have some cool parkas and other original gear, too. I recommend this place not only for the shop itself, but the Gakugei-daigaku neighborhood, too. The area is full of things to see—cafes, bookstores, restaurants, and all that—and the atmosphere is very chill. I like going over to nearby Streamer Coffee Company to relax for a minute after picking up some vinyl.”

Record Shop
“A record store with a lot of jazz records in what I consider Tokyo’s Greenwich Village—Shimokitazawa. They have the best deals in the city, hands down. The basic price is about ¥800, and the owner frequently has sales. Any record I’ve ever wanted, I tell the owner and he has always been able to find it. The owner puts his new shipment of records, all sourced from Los Angeles, out for sale every Saturday morning. If you show up here before the store opens up, you can see DJs lining up in anticipation.”

Thrift / Vintage Store
“The selection of vintage men’s and ladies fashion is impressive here, from collectors’ items to in-the-now styles, all sourced from secondhand sellers. There’s a wide range of tops—from shirts to tees to jackets—and shoes and accessories to coordinate with them. Both the men’s and women’s selections are equally well stocked. The shop is open until midnight, making it popular with everyone from students to beauticians to workers who’ve just knocked off work—a wide range of clientele. Some female celebs are regulars, too.”

Antique Shop
“This shop has very meticulously selected, high-quality vintage clothing that goes as far back as the early 1900s. Even people who run other vintage and clothing stores in Tokyo have great things to say about this place. The quality is top-notch, of course, but the selection also does a good job reflecting current Tokyo fashion. The clothing here is popular among adults well into their 40s, but there are also some vintage pieces for kids that you won’t find elsewhere. Vintage kids’ clothing is rare in Tokyo.”

Music Store
“A tiny secondhand synth shop on the sixth floor of an office block opposite Tower Records. It sells used and vintage synths, so you’ll find current models like the Elektron range next to a classic Prophet-5. That’s the beauty of this place—it spans decades of electronic music history. Check out the glass case under the counter for missing knobs and pieces. It’s possibly the only brick-and-mortar shop where you can find synthesizers by the Japanese manufacturer beatnic.jp.”

Music Store
“Here you can purchase DJ equipment featured at mega clubs in Tokyo such as Ageha, Asia, and Womb. Pioneer CDJ-2000s are the most popular, although at some of the smaller clubs such as Aoyama Hachi or Trump Room, you'll find oldschool CDJ-1000s. If you want to practice mixing on club equipment, you can go to Studio Noah Shibuya.”
