“Calton hill is part of the World Heritage site and is beyond the east end of Princes Street. It is the perfect place for photography of views over the whole city and has often been used by painters to capture the city. The Scottish Parliament (an amazing modern building) and Holyrood Palace lie at the foot of the hill. On the hill are the National Monument, the Nelson Monument, the Robert Burns Monument and the City Observatory. ”

“If you want to avoid the crowds that descend on Arthur's Seat, there are lots of alternative paths in Holyrood park. Or you can walk around a circular paved road which passes two lochs and gives great views over the city and the coastline. The circular walk is 3 or 4 miles with a gradual uphill section.”

“Start with breakfast at Leith Harbour. There are so many good places to choose from. Then join the Water of Leith pathway and take it all the way to the Modern Art Gallery for a late lunch or just coffee and cake. Leave a couple of hours for this meandering, enjoyable walk which will give you a different way of getting to know Edinburgh.”
