Calling adventurous, nature-loving souls! Experience some of the darkest skies in the Northern Hemisphere at Baja Dark Skies/Rancho la Concepción. We are located near the Parque Nacional Sierra de San Pedro Mártir in Baja California, home to Mexico's National Observatory. You'll need a high clearance vehicle to reach this fabulous, remote location. Enjoy birdwatching, hiking, mt./dirt biking, bonfires or simply come to experience the peace and silence of this mountain getaway! Read on...

Жилье
At Baja Dark Skies we offer a small 2 bedroom casita, suitable for up to four guests. If you are five or six we can provide a guest room in the main house (queen bed, private bathroom and private entrance ) at $40, or an inflatable queen bed in the casita ($30). We also offer basic camping options (water, grill, composting toilet), for $10 plus $10/guest.

The small casita was built out of hand-made bricks of adobe from the property. Most of the walls don't have paint, but are colored with natural pigments. Adobe is an excellent natural insulator.

Each of the two bedrooms has a double bed. The sitting area has a table and chairs and the bathroom has a large walk-in shower. There is a propane heater and hot water. Wifi is available, no streaming, please. There is no cellphone service once you start up the Observatory Road towards the Park.

For cooking you'll find an outdoor uncovered wood fired kitchen/grill with plenty of firewood and a small propane 2 burner stove. Please bring a cooler and ice as there is no refrigerator at this time (waiting for delivery!). Bring food for your meals, flashlights, warm clothes for the mountains. There are some camping basics; plates, bowls, cutlery, glasses, mugs, pans, salt and pepper. The water comes from a creek, fine for cooking but we provide filtered water to drink. The nearest store is about almost a two hour drive from Baja Dark Skies!

The nearby Parque Nacional Sierra de San Pedro Mártir is home to the California Condor, and is a 'sky island' of amazing diversity. It also is home to a national astronomical observatory, great hiking and views out to the Sea of Cortes! As of October 2020 it is open Thurs-Sun (the Observatory is still closed).

At 4800 feet/1463 meters the climate is warm and dry but very tolerable in the summer. The shade is always comfortable. Winter can bring cold and occasional snow and rain but plenty of sun!

At the ranch occasional California Condor fly-bys are not uncommon. Hummingbirds are plentiful spring through fall, and you may see deer, jackrabbits, coyotes or the resident bobcat. The night skies are clear 320 days per year and the lack of light pollution will allow you to enjoy the constellations above like never before! The Sierra towers above you while hiking among live oaks, a year-round stream, pines, and cacti on 500 hectares (1230 acres) of private property. Take a dip in the stream in summertime...bring your mountain bikes...enjoy a crisp apple from our tree in fall! As for the sunsets over the Pacific- they just have to be seen to be believed!

The road is awaiting repair; please be aware it is NOT appropriate for compact cars. Small 2WD and AWD SUV vehicles have arrived without damage (WITH ONLY TWO ADULTS) but a vehicle with high clearance (preferably 4 wheel drive/doble tracción) is recommended. The entrance road is 6 km long and most of it is challenging. If you arrive during rainy season you WILL need a 4 wheel drive/doble tracción (not AWD) vehicle. Thank you for your understanding and patience! Remember - the more passengers the lower your vehicle will ride. Four adults and a small SUV will probably not get you here. You don't want to damage your vehicle on this road - it is REMOTE! We can't rescue you. We will not tow your vehicle, or drive down to fetch your belongings. If you decide your vehicle can't safely arrive at the ranch you have two options: move it to a place where other vehicles can get by and walk to the ranch - or turn around. Rancho Meling is easily accesible and only 17 km down the Observatory Road. Rancho Coyote is even closer and La Cienega de Soto is just a few kilometers towards the Park

Sorry, no pets, even on leash. I have laying hens and a rooster that roam free, as well as pet cats and dogs. Visiting dogs, sadly, have not worked out well.

Please copy all necessary information (especially the wifi password) before your trip as your last 1 hour 45 minutes of travel will be without cellular service.

Что доступно гостю
Apart from the casita, you'll have access to over two square miles of private property including a small observatory from which you can marvel at the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean.

Важная информация
Don't try getting here from Mexico 3. Google Maps makes it seem possible--that there's a through road from Mike's Sky Ranch. There is, but it is gated and padlocked. We do NOT recommend you come in that way. Only the most rugged vehicles with the most experienced drivers might make it. If you plan on attempting that route please let me know. It takes 3 hours from Mike's. Come to the ranch from the Transpeninsular Highway (Mex 1)--the turnoff is in Diaz Ordaz (San Telmo de Abajo) at about 140km south of Ensenada. There's a big sign - PARQUE NACIONAL SIERRA DE SAN PEDRO MÁRTIR. (While you have service if you put in 'Baja Dark Skies' - that is Rancho La Concepción.)

Please let us know when you turn off the highway for the Observatory road. You won't have cell service after this. We'll assume you'll arrive in under two hours from there. Let us know if you plan any detours so we won't worry! Drive 67 km up this winding, narrow and scenic road. In the morning and early evening be aware there are a LOT of quail (codorniz) and cottontail rabbits (conejo de cola de algodón) on the road! Shortly after km 67 on the left you'll see an open gate and a sign to Rancho La Joya. The fun begins! At about 1.5 km be sure to stay right at the 'Y' and head up. At 2.5 km you will encounter a locked gate and I will send you the padlock code. Make sure you have it before leaving cellular coverage!!!

Quiet hours - 10PM - 7AM. Please respect the checkout time of 11AM unless other arrangements have been made.

If you are renting one room, please be kind and refrain from using the bedding in the other room - thank you! Also, please be kind and take out your garbage. We can burn paper and we compost, and can store recyclables, but garbage must be taken down the mountain when we go, which is infrequently. Thank you!

The 'neighborhood' is pines, live oaks and cacti and blue skies, sunsets, tracks to hike on, creeks, wildlife, bonfires, barbecue. The 'neighbors' are the Condor Station and the National Park up the road!
