Кларксвилл, Теннесси, Соединенные Штаты

617 Central Ave is located in the Greenwood area of Clarksville, which is one of the oldest areas in the City. Greenwood Ave. is located one block directly in front of the house, and is lined with many grand and stately homes, some restored and some in disrepair.

Greenwood Cemetery is about 1 ½ miles to the south of Central Ave, and is one of the oldest cemeteries in the state of Tennessee. It is the final resting place of many famous people, including Frank Sutton, a Clarksville native, who played Sgt. Carter on the show Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.. The Cemetery sometimes hosts walking tours - check their website for information.

Many notable people are either from Clarksville, or have ties to Clarksville.

Clarence Saunders, the founder of the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store chain, is a Clarksville native.

Wilma Rudolph was born and raised here. In 1960, she became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympics. She is buried in the Greenwood area at Edgefield Missionary Baptist Church, about a mile from Central Ave. Wilma Rudolph Boulevard, in Clarksville, was given its name in dedication to her in 1994. There is also a life-sized bronze statue of her at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center, located at 1190 TN Hwy 48 in Clarksville, about 2 ½ miles from Central Ave.

Jimi Hendrix also has ties to Clarksville. In 1961, Hendrix enlisted in the U.S. Army where he trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. While stationed at Fort Campbell, he formed The King Casuals with bassist Billy Cox. While in Clarksville, Hendrix rented a house and began playing gigs with Cox and their band. At the time, there was an active R&B scene in the area of East Franklin St., about 1 mile from Central Ave, and they walked to the clubs to perform. Other locations that he may have played in Clarksville include the American Legion, The Elks Club and the Trane Union Hall.

Robert Penn Warren was born in Gutherie, KY, near Clarksville, and in 1986 became the nation’s Poet Laureate. He graduated from High School in Clarksville in 1921, and the school building where he attended has been restored and is now the Penn Warren Apartments, located ½ mile from Central Ave on Greenwood Ave. The Robert Penn Warren Birthplace is now a museum and is located about 15 miles from Central Ave, in Gutherie, KY.

In the mid 1900’s Clarksville became popular with tourists thanks to Roy Acuff and his Dunbar Cave property. Dunbar Cave is located 5 miles from Central Ave and is now a Tennessee State Park, but in the 1940’s Mr. Acuff transformed the park into a country music entertainment destination. His affiliation with Clarksville began in 1948, when he purchased Dunbar Cave and its surrounding land. He built an 18-hole golf course, that is now the Swan Lake Golf Course. In addition to the golf course, Mr. Acuff attracted people to the area by hosting live music shows inside the cave. With its cool temperatures and great acoustics the cave became a popular gathering place in Clarksville. He also hosted nights specifically for dancing and had a radio show broadcast directly from the cave. In 1985, Austin Peay University created the Roy Acuff Chair of Excellence. This program enables nationally acclaimed artists, musicians, and writers to visit the Austin Peay Campus throughout the year to interact with students.

On January 22, 1999, downtown Clarksville was hit by an F3 Tornado, with winds in excess of 160 mph. A wide swath of the downtown area was destroyed. 122 buildings were completely destroyed, and hundreds more were damaged. Several historic downtown churches, including Trinity Episcopal and Madison Street United Methodist, had their roofs and spires torn off. The historic Montgomery County Courthouse was almost completely demolished. Twenty two buildings at Austin Peay University, one mile from Central Ave, were heavily damaged. The tornado hit at 4:15 am, and thankfully no lives were lost. In 2000 the city commissioned a mural depicting 15 buildings in Clarksville of historical and architectural significance that were damaged by the tornado. The mural was completed in the summer of 2000 and is located at 106 Franklin St, about 1 ½ miles from Central Ave.

The Bell Witch Cave is located about 20 miles from Central Ave, in Adams TN. The Bell Witch is an evil witch famous in Southern Folklore, and the Bell Witch Cave is considered to be one of the most haunted places in America. Tours of the cave are given during the summer months. Check their website for more information.
