West Bay Hideaway
Keep cozy in our eco friendly cabin situated on Manitoulin Island, in the North Channel of beautiful Lake Huron.
It’s the perfect spot if you want a quiet and relaxing retreat with your own private beach, quiet campfires and no city lights to hide the magnificent stars. Tuck your favorite book under your arm, stroll down to the lake and be lulled by the waves or just take in the beauty of your surroundings.

The Hideaway Space

If you've ever dreamt of living in a little cabin off grid, here's the perfect opportunity to see what this lifestyle is all about! This two story, 500 square foot small space has so many offerings we hardly know where to start. The cabin is very clean, cozy, comfortable and everything you could want.

On the main floor you can snuggle up by the wood stove, cuddle up on the couch or bust out one of the board games you loved to play as a kid. There is a well equipped kitchen with a stove & fridge, plenty of pots & pans and if thats not your gig we have a spacious deck for relaxing and outdoor meals cooked on the Bar-B-Que.

The second story space is over looking West Bay. If you’re an early riser you can relax comfortably in the queen bed and watch the sunrise over the La Cloche Mountain range. Or close those shades and sleep in to the peacefulness of the waves. We have a tucked away, trundle bed hideout for two extra guests. And, in a pinch the couch on the main floor is a pull out.

Our light system is a limited and solar generated. If you need to keep connected we have one charging port for a phone and cell service is available
We supply drinking water that you can use for cooking, washing up, or to make tea or coffee.
Just a few steps out of the bunkie is a well kept outhouse with a great view
We love our out door shower where fresh clear water is pumped from the North channel to an elevated tank to warm with the sun, but we do have on demand hot water for the faint of heart.

In the summer months the breeze off the lake keeps things comfortable. And don't get us started on spring and fall, they're absolutely perfect with the best of both worlds, warm enough to venture outside, and cool enough to still need the wood stove for a romantic night in the snug warm heat. We presume you’re coming to unplug, get quiet and connect to nature but if you’re looking for WiFi and shopping, we are not the right fit for you. If you are looking for a unique experience with a few off-grid perks, we welcome you to join us in our paradise!

What to do, What to do

If a more active lifestyle is your thing we are situated just minutes from the Cup & Saucer trail a great way to see some of the beautiful scenery on Manitoulin Island from the cliff lookouts along the trail. The trail runs along part of the Niagara Escarpment which always provides some interesting topography. Bridal Veil Falls is just a hop skip and a jump as we are located five minutes from Kagawong. This is just the tip of the iceberg for hiking enthusiast. Don’t get me started on cycling, Manitoulin Island is a holiday destination that is uniquely appropriate for cycling.

The island is home to six Anishinaabe reserves (M'Chigeeng, Sheguiandah, Sheshegwaning, Aundeck Omni Kaning, Wikwemikong and Zhiibaahaasing.) And hold traditional Pow Wows from June to Sept. visitors are invited to join the fun!

We have two kayaks for your use and supply life jackets but it is always recommended if you are an avid paddler looking for an excursion to supply your own safety gear.

Marc & I are a crazy semi retired couple, who packed up our stable suburban life, to sail the world. Problem was, after a year sailing from Manitoulin Island the North Channel of Lake Huron in Ontario to Chicago Illinois, Chicago to Mobile Alabama, (1,300 miles down more than six different waterways and 22 or more locks) across the Gulf of Mexico, to the south west coast of Florida, around the Florida Keys, across to Cuba, over to Mexico, back to the east coast of Florida. With countless miles, one year, four countries, numerous cities, a few blunders, many successes, limitless sunrises and sunsets this mama was tired and wanted to go home. The captain on the other hand was invigorated, so we did what we have always done for over 30 years, we compromised and now spend six months sailing and six months home in Northern Ontario. With no where to live we purchased land on Manitoulin Island and built West Bay Hide Away as a temporary place to stay, until we built a permanent home, but we fell in love with the bunkie and building bigger has gone to the wayside. The property is a work in progress and a labour of love that over four years is evolving with each season. We are building memories here that sustain us when we sail. Family, gardening, hiking and bird watching fill me each summer while Marc plans our next years sailing adventure. Recently we purchased a house in Sudbury Ontario that we are renovating as more permanent housing. We are excited about hosting on Air B & B allowing us to meet people from all over, share our favourite spot and an opportunity to reinvest in the property. 5 Things we could never do without Water, sand, sunshine and sometimes even snow Our passports A camera A good pair of running shoes Family and most of all… Each other

Things Of Note

During your stay you will have full use of the hideaway and we are happy to give you total privacy. But, if you have questions or are interested in knowing more about what's happening around the area, don't be shy! Call or send a text if there is anything you need.

There are two fire pits for your use, one near the cabin and one at the lake and we supply the wood for your use. We do need to apply for fire permits and be aware of fire dangers.

We have 250’ of private beach for you to lounge on, splash in or paddle on. Water shoes are recommended. Manitoulin Island is an amazing area for fossils and our beach is better known by the locals as fossil beach. Its easy to get lost for hours poking around looking for interesting discoveries.

1 June to 28 June and after the Sept long weekend
minimum four day rentals are available
Mid June until after the Sept long weekend We only rent by the week Saturday to Saturday.
