Elegant bungalow, very private+comfortable. AC+heat, washer+dryer, saltwater pool, beautiful landscaping, off-street parking. Beach 0.7-mi, quaint downtown Carlsbad 0.5-mi walk or bike. Perfect for business travelers, snowbirds, visiting family, etc. Your hosts live on the far side of a large lot. We're a quiet middle-aged couple sharing our gorgeous property for 30-days or more with those who also appreciate a peaceful environment. No smoking parties, gatherings, extra guests, children or pets.

WELCOME!

Because you’ll be staying with us for at least a month, and often several – we’ve compiled below everything potential guests tend to ask. Please feel free to ask any questions, we’re easy-going and flexible.

LOCATION

Driftwood Bungalow is an airy and bright studio with lots of windows, carefully planned and laid out so as to feel spacious. It’s situated far away from our house, on the other side of the pool, on a large lot – adjacent to other accommodations – however still very secluded with its own entrances and private rear yard.

Two sets of big French doors open up to let in coastal breezes, and views of the gorgeous landscaping and pool. There is a very comfortable queen bed with high quality orthopedic mattress, dining table and chairs, good size closet and almost every possible amenity you need – and if it’s not there just ask and we’ll try to oblige.

Sean is a local yacht broker, and Katie is a home-based graphic designer, so you might see us around the property occasionally but not that much.

We're available for whatever you need via text or phone Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm

We’ll give you our house phone number to call off-hours for emergencies.

QUIET GUESTS & HOUSE RULES

We live a very quiet lifestyle, and the Bungalow is very much suited to guests who desire the same. We retire early most evenings. We don't want parties, gatherings, or frequent additional overnight guests on the property.

We have found that “House Rules” keep everyone happy – ours are listed at the very bottom here. We will ask you to read and agree to them before accepting your booking. Don’t worry, guests seem to love them and return every year because they know it will be quiet here. The peace and solitude will be desirable for some guests, and not for others – we’re not offended if it's not for you :-)

LONG-STAYS

We welcome guests for a minimum of 30-days. For stays longer than 30-days we ask our guests to book the first 30-days through Airbnb, and any subsequent time will be on a simple fixed-term lease with refundable security/damages deposit. This is an entirely normal arrangement for long-stay Airbnb hosts, it’s straightforward to set up, and works out well for guests and hosts.

BUSINESS TRAVELERS

Driftwood Bungalow is a great place to work from home with high speed wifi, and hard-line ethernet if needed. The coffee table pops up into a laptop desk, or use the dining table.

PARKING

The Bungalow has one off-street parking space in front of our house. Access is down the side of our house through beautiful landscaping, past the pool, to the French door entrance. After 8pm other guests may use this entrance, but the rest of the time it’s just for you.

FREEWAY SOUND

Like everyone in our quiet neighborhood we're close to the freeway, which is a constant background hum. Upside – quick freeway access! Having lived here for decades we never notice the sound, but we like to mention it so that nobody is surprised. Once inside, the freeway is quiet.

HEAT & AIR

The Bungalow has a wall AC unit and gas wall heater. AC isn’t often needed in Coastal Carlsbad, except for a few hot days in July or August when it's actually cooler to leave all the doors and windows open and let in the lovely coastal breeze – but you're welcome to use AC if you prefer. Winter mornings and nights are sometimes chilly and the heater warms the place right up.

Enjoy Netflix on a brand new smart TV. You're also welcome to login to your personal streaming accounts. There is no live or cable TV.

POOL & LANDSCAPING

The pool and landscaping are both professionally maintained weekly at around the same time, so you know what to expect. There will be a little leaf blowing, and the landscapers will go into your private rear yard to take care of whatever needs doing.

You’re welcome to use the saltwater solar-heated pool from 7am to 7pm every day. "Saltwater" means it's low on chemicals, much nicer than a regular pool. "Solar-heated" means the temp is always around 10 degrees above the current air temp. So the water will still be chilly in the winter if you're brave enough! The pool is for your personal use only – not for visitors or gatherings.

CHILDREN

We don't allow visitors under 18 on the property for safety/liability reasons – it’s not set up or suitable for children – plus for the peace and quiet of other guests.

CLEANER

We require guests staying a month or more to pay for a once-monthly clean with our cleaner Tania, she charges only $40 and you pay her direct – she doesn’t change beds, do dishes or wash towels – you just get a good thorough clean.

Included in your stay – all-natural cleaning products, laundry detergent, dishwasher powder and other supplies such as toilet paper, kitchen towels, cleaning cloths and sponges, etc. Your stay also includes the move-out clean after you leave.

2020 SPECIFIC
IMPORTANT CLEANING NOTE

Since March 2020 we now leave 5 days between bookings to allow enough time to prepare for your stay. The Bungalow is thoroughly cleaned, during which our cleaner wears a mask and gloves. Everything in the Bungalow is laundered except the drapes and cushion covers! We put everything possible – from every closet, drawer and kitchen cabinet – through the dishwasher to be sanitized on a hot wash. We spray every surface with Hydrogen Peroxide (CDC approved natural sanitizer) and then nobody goes into the Bungalow for 24-hours before your arrival.

2020 SPECIFIC
CHECK-IN & CHECK-OUT

Please check-in before 3pm on your day of arrival – and check-out before 11am on your day of departure.

On arrival Katie does a walk-through with you, showing you the property grounds and inside the Cottage. It takes around 15-minutes. For everyone’s safety we leave doors and windows open during the walkthrough.

The walk-through is important – from past experience there is stuff we just need to explain or show you in person – it can’t be done via text or video call. The check-in time request is because Katie has an ongoing illness and gets tired after 3pm.

2020 SPECIFIC
MAIL & DELIVERIES

Brooks Cottage has its own address but delivery drivers can never find it – plus since Covid we (and guests) prefer they are not wandering around the yard – so we’ve found the following works well:

Mail – send to Brooks Cottage address, you pick up in the mailbox out by the street

Packages – send to our address, we’ll bring down to a “deliveries” bin by the pool daily

Grocery Deliveries, etc – you’ll need to meet drivers at the front gate, let them know when ordering

ALLERGIES

For those with allergy concerns – we only launder bedding and towels using allergy-friendly unscented detergent, and use only all-natural cleaning products.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Our home is situated in a very quiet residential part of Olde Carlsbad. Downtown Carlsbad and the beach are a 10-15 minute walk, a 5 minute bicycle ride, or a 2 minute drive. We have a couple of older but functional bicycles you’re welcome to use, provided you lock them up with the locks provided. You use our bicycles at your own risk.

BOAT CHARTERS

Sean is a USCG Licensed Captain offering charters aboard our beautiful 42ft sailboat "Serenity". It's a truly fantastic experience – sunset cruises, afternoon sails exploring for whales and dolphins, or just getting out on the blue water to cruise and enjoy the beautiful coastline.

If you’re interested in booking a sail charter we recommend booking well in advance if possible, because Sean gets booked up. It’s normally $450 for a 3-hour sail – however, we offer our Airbnb guests a special rate of $250 (for the charter, not per person).

Serenity is fully equipped for comfort with two staterooms, two heads, galley and a huge comfortable cockpit, with plenty of roomy deck space to move about the boat and relax.

PETS
SERVICE ANIMALS

We are currently unable to accommodate pets. If you will be bringing a Service Dog you are not required to notify us in advance, but Airbnb suggests that since you’re staying on our property it’s courteous to do so. Per ADA we’re also permitted to ask and it helps us to know – is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? And what work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

Per ADA rules:

- Service Animals must never be left unattended inside the Bungalow, must be under guest control at all times, and must always be cleaned-up after

- There is no additional cleaning fee for a Service Animal, but if a Service Animal causes damage we will charge for repairs the same as we would consider charging any guest in such circumstances.

There is one Sago Palm on the property, a plant that is highly toxic to dogs – we’ll show you where it is at check-in.

RUBY

Our Australian Shepherd Ruby does not roam the back yard unaccompanied so you'll rarely encounter her. On the rare occasion she sees you she'll bark out of anxiety, but she's a sweet dog.

HOUSE RULES

As stated above – don’t be put off by the House & Pool Rules – guests love them and return every year because they know it will be quiet here: –

- Quiet hours – 8pm to 8am

- No smoking inside or outside your unit – or anywhere on the property

- No loud music – this means music that we or other guests (or neighbors) – can hear

- No extra overnight guests – your Airbnb is for registered guests only

- No parties or gatherings anywhere on the property

- No children under 21 anywhere on the property for safety/liability reasons

- No pets inside your unit or anywhere on the property for safety/liability reasons

POOL RULES

- Pool hours – 7am to 7pm

- Pool and pool-deck for guest use only – no visitors or gatherings

- ABSOLUTELY NO glass or ceramics around the pool – if something breaks we have to empty the pool to find it, and refilling the pool costs $900, a cost we would pass on to you

- You use the pool at your own risk – we are not responsible for any injuries sustained when using the pool and you indemnify us for any actions resulting from any injuries

Sean is a USCG licensed captain and yacht broker in nearby Oceanside harbor, and offers sail charters to Airbnb guests special rates. Originally from the UK, Katie works from home as a graphic and web designer. Our Australian Shepherd Ruby does not roam the yard unaccompanied so you'll rarely see her. We're relaxed, casual, love to laugh, watch movies, and go sailing on our boat "Serenity". Our favorite place on earth is nearby Catalina Island, if you get the chance to visit it's a must see.
