"This place is a total gem. It is so beautiful, well done and well cared for. The nature and views are spectacular. The staff are competent, friendly and attentive. We have had lovely walks and just enjoyed every minute so far. We wish we could stay longer this time. But I will definitely come back and recommend the place. Thanks for the tip." Iris, Nairobi, May 2018

The ideal escape from the city for a weekend or longer, Susie’s Camp sits in the perfect private Naivasha location – quiet, exclusive and secluded, yet close to the Lake and to all the attractions of the surrounding area including Mount Longonot, Hell’s Gate National Park and Crescent Island Nature Reserve.

Brand new in 2018, nothing has been spared in making the camp as comfortable and welcoming as possible. There are just three substantial and airy ‘tent cottages’, part top-quality safari canvas, part wood and stone, each is topped with a soaring thatched roof constructed out of traditional coastal ‘makuti’ imported specially from Kilifi.

The two accommodation tents, each measuring 6 x 13 metres, are unusually roomy and tastefully furnished and equipped. As well as a King-size double bed with top-quality mattress and linen, each has an internal sitting area with comfortable armchairs and coffee table. While the camp is best for 2-4 guests, there is room for an additional single bed to be added to accommodate one or two smaller children sharing with their parents.

To the rear of each accommodation tent there is a large and well-planned ensuite bathroom with twin sinks, separate shower and lavatory, plus dressing room area with wardrobe. To the front of each tent is a veranda with safari chairs and chaise longue looking out across the swimming pool and surrounding bush towards Lake Naivasha.

The central ‘mess’ tent, measuring 6 x 15 metres, has a comfortable central living area with sofa and arm chairs and to the rear a spacious, rustic and comprehensively equipped kitchen. Eat here at the breakfast bar or at the 6-seater Balinese teak dining table on the mess veranda, or down at the shaded outdoor table beside the lovely ‘free form’ heated swimming pool.

The camp sits within its own private 2-acre compound with lawns and Acacia trees, close to the owners’ own beautiful bush home and horse stables.

“I’ve stayed at Susie’s Camp and enjoyed it so much – the view, the peace, the luxury of such good taste both in the building and the interior design – I couldn’t recommend it more highly.” Lucinda, UK

“Stunning! I can personally vouch for this amazing property – the location, the people and the design are all to the very highest standard.” Sarah, Nairobi

“The camp is in a stunning location and comes with some excellent cooking and meal options. You are just 5 minutes from the lake, 15 minutes from Hell's Gate – or you might prefer to just hang by the pool and watch the animals. It was awesome and we will be back.” Damon, Nairobi

Naivasha, Nakuru County, Кения

Susie's Camp sits just 2km south of Lake Naivasha on the fringes of the 80,000-acre Kedong Ranch which straddles the slopes of Mount Longonot and borders Hell's Gate National Park to the West.

Lake Naivasha sits at the highest elevation of the Kenyan Rift valley at 1,884 metres (6,181 ft) and around 90km north west of Nairobi. The name Naivasha comes from the word Nai’posha meaning rough water in the language of the Maasai, and the surface of the 50-square mile lake can often be subject to unexpected squalls and storms.

In early colonial times the lake became a popular retreat for white settlers with a number of beautiful and unusual houses being built along the lake shore, such as the notorious Djinn Palace. In the 1930s the lake began to be used by Imperial Airways as a landing place for their flying boats travelling between England and South Africa.

Naivasha and the surrounding area remains popular with weekenders from Nairobi and there are numerous water sports and related activities on hand for visitors. Boating, sailing, fishing, and bird watching are available at various locations around the lake – as is horse riding, biking and hiking. Golf takes place in a spectacular location at the Great Rift Valley Golf Resort off North Lake Road.

Apart from tourism, the major business of Naivasha is floriculture – numerous flower farms are to be found close to the lake shore and export large quantities of flowers, especially roses, to Europe daily. Another major commercial enterprise on the lake is the geothermal plant, which was commissioned in 1981 and now generates a substantial amount of electricity.

The lake and its surroundings are home to a wide variety of wildlife and game including a large population of hippopotamus and several species of fish. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded here, and the lake is home to Pelicans and Kenya’s largest concentration of African Fish Eagles. You will often see large flocks of Flamingos and Pelicans on Lake Oloiden which adjoins the South West corner of the lake.

Hells Gate National Park is one of the few National Parks that permits walking, bicycling and rock climbing. Both Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower make challenging ascents for rock climbers, as does the escarpment. The gorge, slicing through striking rock formations, contains a series of hot springs that heat the surrounding rocks, and local guides are available to guide walkers through the gorge. The park is home to plains game and other wildlife, and is particularly known for vultures, eagles and buzzards. The setting for the film The Lion King was heavily based on the area.

Crescent Island, an arc of land linked to the mainland lake shore by a causeway, has a number of animals but no predators, and makes a lovely place to walk and picnic. Crater Lake, to the West of Lake Naivasha, also has wildlife, birdlike and attractive walks. Mount Longonot, between Naivasha and Nairobi, is an inactive volcano whose crater makes for a lovely but quite strenuous walk with spectacular views both into the crater and across the surrounding area.

For food and general supplies there is good shopping in Naivasha Town and at the new Buffalo Mall which has a large Tusky’s supermarket, plus good vegetable shop and wine shop. There is a farm shop nearby on South Lake Road at Elementaita Weavers and Fired Earth Pottery.

Recommended places to eat off South Lake Road include Matteo's Italian Restaurant & Bar and Carnelly’s Restaurant - plus the highly recommended Ranch House Bistro at Lake Oloiden where there is also a large and well-stocked farm shop 'La Pieve'.

After working in book publishing in London, I spent several years living on wonderful Lamu Island and designed, built and restored a number of traditional houses there. Now I am based in Nairobi with a young family.
