Regrettably, under the current COVID19 crisis, Seasend is unable to take bookings for 2020 until government health authorities declare leisure travel to Newfoundland is permissable and safe. All bookings to date have been notified of cancellations. My sincerest condolences to families who have been directly affected by the disease, and I very much hope all others remain safe and healthy through this awful pandemic.

Жилье
Seasend--Seaside Ocean View is a modern bungalow with the main floor for your exclusive enjoyment for the duration of your booking, including an ample wrap-around deck with a BBQ grill.

An open floor plan takes advantage of the extraordinary view of the cove, the river estuary and the surrounding hills. The deck is fully exposed to sun on clear days, and guests can locate themselves for shelter as the wind changes directions or during rain showers.

The main floor has two fully furnished bedrooms, but if you need additional sleeping arrangements, contact your host before booking. All extra arrangements must first be cleared by your host. The availability of additional space is contingent on a number of factors and cannot be assumed. Prior notice is necessary.

If during your stay at Seasend you have a visitor who you invite to stay overnight (past 2AM), you must again have prior approval from the host. As above, additional space for an overnight visitor is not to be assumed. An instance of an overnight guest without prior notification/approval may result in immediate cancellation of your booking, without refund.

Regretfully, guests must not bring their pets to Seasend.

Что доступно гостю
Guests have their own entrance to the main floor. Your host Kevin occupies the downstairs apartment with a separate entrance. You are able to lock doors against unauthorized entry. However, Kevin has keys to all areas of the house for emergencies.

Seasend's main floor and its side deck are exclusively for AirBnB guests.

There is direct interior access to the laundry facilities (shared with your host from the lower apartment). The yard/lawns are also shared spaces.

Seasend has ample parking space.

The garage is for the owner's personal storage. The greenhouse is for garden storage only.

Важная информация
MSN website listed Salmon Cove Sands as one of 20 must-visit beaches in Canada (June 27/19). MSN doesn't elaborate on its reasons for the pick, but it is obvious to most who spend time here.

Icebergs and whales can never be guaranteed, but they are common to the island's east coast through spring to mid-summer and are occasionally seen even later in the year off Salmon Cove. Boat tours are available all around the Avalon Peninsula for a closer experience and better photo opportunities. Other attractions/amenities in the general area that are worth noting are listed as Recommendations at the bottom of this section.

Newfoundland is an environment of extraordinary scenery, and the view from Seasend over the cove and out over the North Atlantic Ocean is one of its most pleasing at any time of day, in any kind of weather.

Seasend is directly on the bank of Salmon Cove River where it empties into Salmon Cove. The cove's large sandy beach, administered and maintained by Salmon Cove Sands Park, is a popular attraction in summer, particularly for families. Park rules forbid ATVs/vehicles on the beach. The Park staff ensure that the beach is kept clean. However, there is NO LIFEGUARD SERVICE--parents must be vigilant when their children are near or in the water; adult swimmers enter the water at their own risk.

The mouth of the river is especially favoured by younger waders/swimmers. Guests with children must be mindful of the river's current, combined with ebbing and flooding tides. Walking across the river to the main beach is possible at low tide, but the river bottom may be slippery. Water shoes are advised. Also, the rising tide may require a longer walk back to Seasend (approximately a half-hour for an adult). Please note that storms can radically alter the conformation of the beach and rivermouth. This description must be taken only as general information and may not apply for the actual period of your stay at Seasend.

The Avalon Peninsula is the meeting point of the cold Labrador Current and the warmer Gulf Stream. The most apparent effects of their merging occurs in spring to the end of June, when weather can be unpredictable. July and August are more easily planned for, but the maritime climate is full of surprises. If you are coming from a warm latitude or a continental climate, pack light sweaters and/or jackets for those rare 'nippy' nights of summer. Even then, days can be 'scorchers' by Newfoundland standards. And you will be grateful for the sea breezes.

Newfoundland has no snakes, racoons, skunks, nor porcupines. The only wild cat is the rarely seen Newfoundland Lynx. Occasionally polar bears appear along the northeast coast of the island, having drifted southward on sea ice in search of seals. When they are sighted, their locations are publicized by wildlife authorities. The island's largest native predator is the black bear. There is no record of these bears injuring people; and sightings on the Avalon Peninsula are rare. Wildlife biologists are monitoring the islands relatively new population of coyotes and wolves. Again, there have been no reports to date of people attacked/injured by these animals. Moose range over the whole island and pose a hazard to drivers. Extra care is advised while traveling during dawn and dusk, when moose seem more likely to approach roadways. Caribou travel in small herds through the wilderness interior of the island, including the southern areas of the Avalon Peninsula.

While there are no poisonous insects, people with allergies to bites/stings should take the usual medical precautions.

Most of the terrain accessible from Seasoned is 'crown land' and is free to traverse. The area has numerous wilderness trekking and cycling routes. In late summer wild berries are plentiful, including: raspberries, currents, saskatoons/chuckley pears, bakeapples/cloudberries, blackberries, and especially blueberries. In any given year, the fruiting of berry bushes depends on the prevailing summer weather.

The river that runs past Seasend is a 'scheduled' river where the annual run of Atlantic salmon has benefited from restoration of the habitat over the past decade. A Provincial angling license is necessary for both residents and non-residents for licensed/scheduled rivers whether fishing for salmon or trout. Fisheries and Oceans Canada lists rivers each summer where salmon fishing is either permitted or forbidden, depending on river conditions and the department's monitoring of the health of the salmon stock. Check online for DFO's Angler's Guide 2019-2020 for information on open/closed rivers, catch rates, etc.

Seasend is an ideal base for day-trips to explore any point of the Avalon Peninsula and take in the various summer cultural events and music festivals, as well as historic and natural attractions. You can drive to St. John's, the capital city, for its attractions, festivals, or for shopping--and be back at Seasend for evening relaxation.

No general application pesticides are used on Seasend's lawns or garden plants or in the house. Instead, direct remedies are used only when and where necessary. You may wish to have your choice of fly repellent, such as Off, Woodsman, etc., while lounging outside. However coastal breezes and proximity to the ocean keep mosquitos and black flies relatively scarce.

- Stone Jug Pub and Restaurant - a heritage ambiance with steak-house menu with Newfoundland accents.
- And a yaffle of fast food franchises.
-Green Door Books on Water St. for a surprising range of genres/titles/authors, plus vinyl LPs for music enthusiasts who yearn for analogue sound production.

HARBOUR GRACE
-The airfield where Amelia Earhart began her aerial crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, the first by a solo woman flyer.

BRIGUS
- Brigus Sea, Salt and Thyme-'Gastropub' in converted convent-menu features local foods/accents, not lavish (even nun-ish on the plate) but yummy and economical.

GRATES COVE
- Grates Cove Studios - Fusion Cajun/Korean/Nfld dishes.

CLARKE'S BEACH
- The Newfoundland Distillery Company--locally distilled and branded spirits.

WINTERTON
- Winterton Wooden Boat Museum -- preserving/interpreting the Nfld wooden boatbuilding heritage with boatbuilding workshops by internationally renown Jerome Canning.

ST. JOHN'S
- India Gate Restaurant--pricey, but one of the finest Indian restaurants I've found during my travels in the East and in the West;
- Ship Pub for tasty, filling mid-day lunches and entertainment most nights--from literary readings to traditional and alternative rock, jazz and world music.
There are many more eateries in St. John's, which have garnered a reputation for matching the best dining across Canada.

Salmon Cove, Ньюфаундленд и Лабрадор, Канада

Salmon Cove is a town of only 700 people nestled into a glacially formed valley. Ten to 15 minutes away by car is the town of Carbonear (pop. 5000), with a regional hospital, a shopping mall, various fast food franchises, cafes, and restaurants, an art gallery and venues featuring live entertainment and theatre.

Seasend is in the middle of Conception Bay North, comprising a string of historic towns southward from Carbonear to Cupids and Brigus, each offering their own summer attractions and northward from Perry's Cove to Bay de Verde and Grates Cove where the landscape and ocean vistas evoke Ireland and the Hebrides. A hour drive south will take you to Placentia Bay and the Irish Loop. A half hour drive west and you are in Trinity Bay.

St. John's, the capital city (population 150,000), is less than a 1.5 hour drive eastward.

A WARNING ABOUT ROADS: Major highways are normally not a concern, but community and regional roads are often in bad repair. Drive cautiously and be vigilant for potholes, and deteriorating pavement at the edges of the roads. Also during rainy conditions pavement rutting increases the hazard of hydro-planing.

Summer is the most intense period of road construction. For reliable road reports search the web for Newfoundland government road construction reports (sorry, URLs are not permitted in the listing).

I am a writer/blogger (search "Seasend blog") and retired college instructor. I have had opportunity to travel extensively in N. America, Europe, the Mediterranean, Middle East and Southeast Asia. Born in Newfoundland I have a passionate affinity for coastal environments. I value the unpolluted air of my island, the clarity of its skies and the (mostly) pristine ocean, waterways and wilderness that have sustained the island's inhabitants going back 7000 years. I was born and raised in the spectacular Bay of Islands on Newfoundland's west coast (where, by the way, I have kin who own and operate hospitality establishments: Kindlewood Chalets; and Marble Inn Resort), but I am most at home on the Avalon Peninsula. I am attracted to the elemental character of its landscapes and the constant presence in every direction of the North Atlantic Ocean. Possibly 'elemental' is what I aspire to be, with basic comforts and nothing material that intrudes on my fullest engagement with my piece of the planet. I like to think that those who choose to abide for a time at my place on the ocean will likewise come to know the same elemental sense of wonder. It should be no surprise then that I am not a fan of all-terrain-vehicles, personal water craft (i.e., jet skis), or motorized trail bikes. They damage terrain and pollute the water and air and generally disturb our natural environments. I do not welcome such machines at Seasend. During your stay I will be happy to advise on where, when and how to make the most of your stay in this region.
