If this yurt were in Mongolia, it would belong to a king. Be in the middle of Nature while enjoying a full kitchen, bathroom with shower, climate control and cozy woodstove, plus an outdoor private hot tub. Perfect for couples, our yurt is nestled in the middle of our 20-acre family home, the yurt is surrounded by yards, gardens, ponds, covered decks, and forest—and just 25 minutes to Asheville or the ski slopes. Note: we do limit our guest capacity to 2 people.

Жилье
This modern yurt is based on the Mongolian design used by nomads for thousands of years. A permanent structure with a replaceable fabric skin, the yurt is 30 feet in diameter and has a 15-foot conical ceiling capped by a clear dome.

The exposed wooden framework of the walls and ceiling surround you. Tile and hickory floors reflect the natural world. Hanging tapestries and rugs echo the yurt’s nomadic past. A woodstove offers warmth in the winter, letting your gaze dance with the fire. A modern climate system keeps the yurt comfortable in the summer, supplying constant heat in the winter.

Inside the yurt, listen to the wind in the treetops and hear the rain play on the roof like a drum. Frogs and crickets lull you to sleep, and if you're lucky, the moon through the dome might wake you up.

The kitchen is fully equipped for some nice home cooking, with a full size stove, oven and fridge, and supplied with cooking and baking utensils. It's a place for slow easy menus, (no microwave, k-cups, or automatic ice maker). Come ready to relax and enjoy your meals, whether you choose to eat inside or out on the deck.

The hot tub is always at the ready and is a great way to start—or end—any day. Towels are provided.

Что доступно гостю
The yurt is situated in the center of Floating Leaf Family Farm. We practice permaculture, sustainably developing our land with gardens, an orchard, nine different kinds of berries, rain harvesting, mushroom cultivation, and a fish pond, capped by our state-of-the-art, solar-powered, four-season tropical greenhouse. We love showing our guests what we have going on here, but you are welcome to enjoy the lawns, orchards, gardens, ponds, creek, and forest on your own.

The pond is open to swimming or fishing—but not at the same time. Diving off the boulders is absolutely allowed. The pond is 10 feet deep, hosts fish and frogs, and in summer, shows off five different colors of water lilies, often with dozens of blooms open at once. The pond is stocked with bluegill, black crappie, and small mouth bass.

A large covered deck overlooks the pond and is a wonderful spot to practice tai chi, yoga, or just hang out. Electricity is available at the deck.

At the other end of the pond is a stone fire circle surrounded by a ring of log stumps to sit on. A small charcoal BBQ sits on a bench nearby. Firewood is stacked by the greenhouse and can be used freely. There is often a pile of sticks and branches waiting to be torched.

Guests are welcome in all the green space around the yurt. You are welcome to stroll through the garden. An old farm road extends into the forest behind the yurt and climbs 200’ to the top of the property where there are amazing views. Feel free to follow it or wander through the open woods.

Down below the greenhouse, a 100-year old tobacco barn reminds us of how long people have been working this sloping land. Much of our efforts here revolve around bringing back the natural fertility that once existed in the mature woods of the Blue Ridge.

Важная информация
Our farm is just a small opening in the woods. Wildlife is abundant. We have hawks nesting in the creek. Great blue herons stand like statues at the pond’s edge, waiting for a meal to swim by. On a rare morning, we can tell that a skunk wandered by in the night. Possums and racoons love our orchard and berries (sigh). Foxes live around here and make very strange sounds at night. Turkeys walk through the woods, along with the deer and grouse. A bobcat has been seen once, also a few coyotes on occasion. There have been no sightings of bear on our property. We have a variety of harmless snakes, some quite large. No venemous snakes have been spotted here. While in the woods you may be the target of chiggers, ticks, and mosquitos. Poison ivy grows well here. Several thorny plants also prosper in our woods. The message: Be careful when enjoying nature—here or anywhere.

Dogs are welcome, though the property is not fenced. We have a dog that will be glad to play, if you like. We ask that dogs be kept under your control either by command or leash. No aggressive dogs, please. Please let us know with your reservation what dog(s) you are bringing (age and breed).

You should be aware that the yurt, as nice as it is, is not insulated. Keeping it warm on a cool night is not difficult, but keeping it cool on a sunny hot day is pretty much impossible. If you plan a visit during the warm weather, you should plan to get out and do things during the day and enjoy the yurt in the morning and evening hours. Also, because it is not insulated, you will hear all the sounds of the forest and farm around you. There are crowing roosters and barking dogs in the neighborhood. If you are a light sleeper, you might want to bring earplugs.

Mars Hill, Северная Каролина, Соединенные Штаты

Madison County is home to some of the oldest American music known. The Bascom Lamar Lunsford Music Festival honors that heritage every year at Mars Hill University campus.

Live music can be found in both Mars Hill and Marshall. The Rural History Museum at MHU is open most days and free to the public. Blannahasset Island, across the river from Marshall, is a peaceful park under shady trees along the French Broad River. Downtown Marshall is where you’ll find Zuma’s, the coolest—and only—coffee shop around. If you are adventurous, visit Hot Springs, where there is always something exciting going on.

My husband and I are freelance farmers in a small town outside Asheville. He is a writer and copyeditor, and I have been an educator, but recently we have been focusing on building our own sustainable farm. We love the quiet and beauty of the mountains, and enjoy sharing our love of the earth with others. We welcome our guests to enjoy our gardens and greenhouse and invite them to join us in our work projects if they would like. There is almost always something to be picked or harvested. We enjoy sharing stories and making connections.

You let us know how much interaction you want. We can be invisible hosts while you enjoy your private serenity. Or we can give you a quick tour and share our adventure with permaculture.

We are happy to give you a tour of the greenhouse and explain how the off-grid system keeps things warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We grow much of our food throughout the year. Our indoor jungle includes several tropical trees: mango, coffee, guava, banana, papaya, avocado, chermoya, lime and lemon. We grow everything without the use of fertilizers or pesticides.

Wild choice edible mushrooms can often be found throughout much of the year. Guided mushroom walks on the property are available.

Private tai chi and qi gong lessons are available.

Fishing equipment, and lessons if needed, are available.
