Late afternoon bird watching is rich is this area. Depending on sunset, you´ll be picked at the office in the historic center Oaxaca city between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. by a trusted taxi driver for a 30-minute trip east to Rancho Pitaya.
Mary Jane will meet you with a checklist of local birds and binoculars for the experience. On the observation porch as you begin spotting the birds that frequent the water tubs and hummingbird feeders. Learn about the native plants on the ranch.
Delight in resident species: Blue Grosbeak, Beryline and Dusky Hummingbirds, Vermillion Flycatcher, Great Kiskadee, and the elegant Bridled Sparrow are just a few. In fall and winter, add Painted Bunting and Ruby-throated Hummingbird to the colorful line-up of winter visitors.
Meander the small horse ranch while Mary Jane points out more species, including the woodpeckers nesting in old-growth cacti. Enjoy refreshments, and snacks on the shady terrace before setting of for the second part of the bird watching experience.
Take a short drive west to wild communal lands, traditional farmlands and the Rio Salado. This diverse terrain offers a new lineup of birds like: Crested Cara-Cara, Groove-billed Ani and Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are just a few.
For the last part of the experience, visit the largest tree on the planet and the birds it attracts.
