Чем вы займетесь

We will go on an exploration of the crazy mixture of history & architecture (Medieval, Renaissance, Cold War, contemporary), music (Bach, Wagner, punk) and literature (from Goethe to DDR poets) -- all compactly represented in the old city (Altstadt) and its immediate environs. We will see where Bach worked and composed, the inn where famous scenes from Goethe's Faust are set, the Renaissance fortification turned student bar/club with great beer and punk music, the medieval church that played a crucial role in the fall of the Wall and the reunification of Germany, and the university (home of luminaries like Leibniz, Nietzsche, Heisenberg, and not least, Angela Merkel!), which also has a curious tendency of being demolished and rebuilt by new political regimes! Along our way, we will also explore a unique facet of Leipzig's architecture, namely the network of "Passagen"/"Höfe" -- the covered and ornately decorated shopping arcades that pass through the city's buildings. While there will be a program, the tour is customisable if you have particular interests. The tour will take about 2 hours and will end with a local German beer in Barfußgässchen (barefoot-alley)!

Thomas

I'm a linguist by profession, working in Berlin and living in Leipzig for several years now. As an academic, I have lived and worked in many different parts of the world: I'm American, but before living in Germany, I lived and worked in Tromsø, Norway (in the northernmost university in the world) and also spend substantial amounts of time in India, where my wife is from. As someone who is both a visitor and a resident, I have a unique, migrant perspective on the vibrant and quirky city that is my current home --- Leipzig. I'm a history buff and language expert, fluent in both English and German, and I find myself making up guided tours of places in my head, on my frequent rambles around the city. I would love to share with you the many landmarks and historical gems that make this city unique.
