Hi, I’m Aya. I was born in Kyoto in 1967. I started to learn Tea Ceremony when I was 13 years old. Even after I have qualified to teach, I continue to learn from my own teacher.
Tea ceremony is connected with other aspects of Japanese culture such as Ikebana (flower arrangement) and Shodō (calligraphy). It’s not just making or drinking tea.
In Kyoto these days there are many tea ceremony experiences led by people unconnected with the Way of Tea. I provide this class as a licenced teacher from the Omotesenke school of tea, and as someone born, raised and living in Kyoto. My class is for people who want an authentic experience of the tea ceremony. I welcome all your questions about the Way of Tea.
In my class,The capacity is 4 or less.If you have 5 people or more in your group, please contact me directly before you make a booking.

Aya and her husband are wonderful, kind, and very passionate about what they do. The location was very easy to find. This was my first time experiencing tea ceremony and I am amazed by the level of expertise that Aya and her husband had in teaching us about this rich tradition. I absolutely recommend this experience! The couple also gave us many recommendations for sightseeing and eating around Kyoto and were very welcoming with any questions we asked!

Wonderful Tea Ceremony Experience. Aya made us feel very welcome, ensure we had understanding of the ceremony through both written and oral descriptions, we were able to dress up and have our hair done, and made the experience very special. She speaks excellent english and takes wonderful photos so the guests can completely absorb themselves in the ceremony. Once in a lifetime experience. Thank you so much!

Aya and her husband made us feel welcome from the minute we walked into the room..They are both very knowledgeable as they are certified ceremony teachers (!) and happily answered our many questions! It was an experience we would recommend to everyone coming to Kyoto. We left with great memories, more energy because of the yummy matcha and lots of tips for our remaining time in Kyoto.

We had a wonderful time with Aya taking part in a traditional tea ceremony, and I would highly recommend this as an experience. Aya clearly comes from a deeply authentic place, and she looked after us with great delicacy and expertise. It was a beautiful experience and I really hope we get a chance to visit Aya again in the future. Tom and Anne.
