Together, we'll get into the history of Christmas traditions while checking out some of the most impressive holiday displays in downtown Toronto. During my studies in Anthropology I wrote a paper on the tradition of gift-giving at Christmas as a social construct to reflect and reinforce family hierarchy and bonds between members of a family unit. Through my research I learned the origins of many traditions and how the modern Christmas holiday in Canada came to be, and designed this tour to showcase that and to share my love of Christmas and the holiday season in general with others. We'll see the lights and decorations at: - City Hall and Nathan Philips Square - The Eaton Centre shopping mall - Yonge Dundas Square - And more! We'll dig through the facts and legends that gave us: - Christmas Trees - Carolling - Santa Claus - The Toronto Santa Claus Parade - Nativity Scenes - Gingerbread Men - Candy Canes - And more! Along the way we'll stop for a coffee or hot chocolate to warm up, and finish at a cozy local pub.
I'm a professional tour guide, experienced improv comic, and have a degree in cultural anthropology with a focus on fine arts cultural studies from York University ('99). I've lived and worked in Japan as an English teacher, Afghanistan as a travel coordinator for the Canadian Forces, and most recently in Vietnam to help start a new craft beer walking tour company. My areas of expertise are craft beer, graffiti art and culture, urban issues, and all things Toronto. I've worked as a tour guide or trip leader in cities throughout Canada and the USA.

This tour is NOT recommended for children, especially young children, since we discuss the origins of Santa Claus and would ruin the belief a child had in his existence as jolly a nocturnal gift elf.
