Чем вы займетесь

In Philadelphia's Seventh Ward, a historic African American community, black lives have always mattered. Far from the city's familiar tourist sites, explore an authentic part of town of classy rowhomes and funky boutiques; artsy mosaics and a storied black past. This eclectic neighborhood was once a thriving corridor of black businesses, churches, and schools in the 1800s. We'll discuss how slavery shaped the worlds of black Philadelphians, and hear the stories of these 19th century African Americans. Learn about a young man who sacrificed his life for the cause of equality; and women who, like Rosa Parks, refused to give up their seats on segregated trolley cars. Discover how the city's black residents worked shoulder-to-shoulder with Frederick Douglass and W.E.B. Du Bois, how riots and violence rocked the city; how black Philadelphians fought for equal rights and the abolition of those enslaved in the South, and how their parties, teas, and concerts combined social activity with philanthropy. Saturday guests will visit Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church's museum to see artifacts from past centuries. Along the way, I'll share images, as well as words from diaries, letters, and newspapers. No story of our nation's black past is complete without the Seventh Ward. Follow the footsteps of those who walked before us, rediscovering their everyday lives and historic activism.

I'm a lifelong history enthusiast, with black American history my focus, passion, and heritage. As "Black History Maven," I host a history and culture social media site. And in more than a decade of work in arts administration, I've led countless continual learning programs and compelling African American interest events for libraries, historic sites, and museums. I'm a member of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides and a dedicated volunteer for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, where I regularly research their expansive African American collections. My creative writing, which has appeared in literary magazines, explores the African American past, and I'm a born storyteller! So I'm excited to share what I've learned--the real stories of African Americans before me who once called Philadelphia home.

Где вы побываете

We'll see the church in which the oldest African Methodist Episcopal congregation in the nation worships, and Saturday guests will tour inside. We'll stand outside the home where an Underground Railroad conductor shuttled hundreds to freedom and on the spot where a civil rights martyr died. We'll see one of the best schools in the country, which only taught African American students; as well as other important locations marking black history.
