Чем вы займетесь

Does even the thought of waiting in line to enter JTNP incite a migraine? Get off the beaten park path and join me on a casual hike through a stunningly quiet and vista-rich section of Pipes Canyon. On this 1.5 hour journey, we'll stop to identify some of the potent medicinal, edible, or otherwise useful plants that have—and continue to be—cultural cornerstones for the Cahuilla people and other native tribes from this region. And maybe we'll even figure out which plants will remedy that headache.

Before we head out on our 1.5-mile hike, we'll go over backcountry basics and ethics of wildcrafting (the art of gathering and using wild plants.) The desert is a sensitive ecosystem, and it's important that we're all aware of best practices while out in the field. We'll drive about a mile in my car to the trailhead (or caravan in two cars if needed.) We'll walk on a dirt trail between two buttes (features of the Sand to Snow National Monument), where we'll make frequent stops to learn about medicinal and edible plants that grow in this area. The trail winds into a massive boulder field, and we'll find a nice perch for a break and to take in the view before heading back.

As a nature-loving chef with an insatiable curiosity, I've spent the past few years researching edible and medicinal flora of the Mojave desert and surrounding regions, and the Native American traditions that have given us this knowledge. In 2016, I founded High Desert Test Kitchen, a community-driven educational project that brought people together to share food prepared with native ingredients. This past year, I started Hole in the Sand, my platform for wild-food events and dinners. I'm excited to introduce you to some of my favorite species from this incredibly diverse and resilient biome!

Где вы побываете

This plant identification walk meanders through a secluded, seldom-visited parcel of public land that was designated the Sand to Snow National Monument by former President Barack Obama in 2015. We'll get to see the Black Lava Butte up close, and Pipes Canyon from afar. Tucked away from the crowds of the national park and out of earshot of major roadways, this sacred place provides trekkers a pure and pristine desert experience. Boulders included!

What a fun experience! I bought this as a gift for my partner and they absolutely loved the desert walk/hike while learning about the various plants and smelling, tasting them and enjoying teas made from them mid-hike. Sarah was very friendly and also I loved that her dog came along :) Highly recommend, very unique experience and exactly what I was looking for on this trip to get more acquainted with the desert.

Sarah's spring bloom and medicinal plant hike was the first activity my companion and I did during our stay in JT, meeting up with her a couple of hours after driving to the area from Long Beach. This was the perfect way to begin our experience of the desert, as Sarah woke us up to an awareness of plants that we encountered later and may not have even noticed had she not so lovingly and expertly introduced us to their special qualities. The hike with Sarah involved some moderate walking and climbing but nothing strenuous, and the views and conversation were all delightful -- as was the selection of teas that she shared with us near the end of our time, at sunset. Sarah is an artist and a chef who has a range of interests and skills, evidenced by the creative "plant-phlet" that she gave us to keep as a reference guide to keep. Totally recommend this experience!

Loved this experience and wish I had time to do it again. I learned a lot about plants and it's also a fun and pleasant hike in a beautiful area. Sarah is a very cool person to talk to and has a deep knowledge of both plants and food, so she provides a unique perspective on the edible and medicinal qualities of plants. Her passion for flora/nature and respect of the land is contagious. Anyone traveling to the area should add this hike to their to-do list!

Wonderful walk in a remote part of the landscape. We were there during super bloom which made it even better. Sarah knows a lot about plants.

We had a lovely time with Sarah and her charming dog, Beatrice (Beatrice does not have to join if you are not comfortable with dogs- Sarah asked if we minded before we set out. ) We had Sarah to ourselves so we were able to ask all the questions we wanted. We learned a lot from her about the local plants as well as the desert and Joshua Tree in general. Sarah was engaging and very knowledge about medicinal and edible plants and made us some fabulous and delicious tea. After the hike she shared additional information and made sure we knew how to get back to town. It was a lovely and fun excursion. Definitely recommend for anyone interested in an eclectic experience with a kind soul.

Что взять с собой

Water: please bring a minimum of 1 liters of water per person—it's better to have more than not enough

Snacks if you want 'em! (And salty if you got 'em! It's important to ingest enough sodium in this climate where we often sweat more than we recognize. We'll be stopping for a tea and snack break in the boulder field.
