Sample and Roast Coffee with a Female Artisan Roastmaster

The coffee lab will begin with a glimpse into the coffee farmer's journey from crop to cup (i.e. the coffee tree, harvesting the fruit, and its processing) in a short film that will cover coffee history and the legendary goat that discovered coffee in Ethiopia.

Next, we'll roast some coffee together, discovering the importance and impact 'roasting' has on the quality of the coffee and what differentiates specialty coffee.

We will then stir it up with a "cupping" session, which is the standard method of taste-assessing single-origin coffees from different regions. This will be a blind coffee tasting that will be paired with bites/snacks that enhance the notes of the coffee.

Afterwards, I will turn everyone into expert brewers by preparing coffee using three or four different methods of brewing utilizing different coffee tools (i.e. V60, Chemex, Aeropress, Syphon, cold brewer, etc). Here, you will see how the same blend of coffee can taste so different just by selection of brewing method.

Everyone will leave with a sample of Catalina Island Roast Coffee to try at home.

A 4-star restaurant accountant and "coffee" magazine publisher, I found a new appreciation for coffee when I visited Hawaiian coffee farms and observed the process from harvest to roast. No longer was coffee just a caffeine jolt to get me functioning in the morning, but I think of it as a labor of love, savor each sip and imagine its path from crop to cup. Transitioning to a roaster on Catalina Island was second nature as I had been roasting coffee at home for over 10 years. Watching the beans from first crack and up to the second crack, then tasting it...truly a priceless pleasure to share.

This experience takes place at our mountain chalet nestled at 7000 ft in the tree-lined forest of Big Bear. We will taste many coffees from different regions and various brew methods; we will even roast coffee. Come and get to know the amazing coffees I roast at sea level on Catalina Island weekly and compare the high altitude coffee we will roast in this lab.

Great experience! Lorren has a very high level of knowledge and can answer any questions you might have. Beautiful home and wonderful set up. Get ready to experience all that coffee has to offer. I would highly recommend this event!

Lorren was very friendly and knowledgeable. She had set up a nice demo in her home along with reasonably priced accessories and coffees. She didn’t mind that we ran over time, in order to ensure we got the full experience, having been a large group. Overall, we felt it was a nice experience.

Lorren was extremely friendly and inviting. Her home was beautiful in a beautiful location. She portrayed knowledge on the topic and encouraged us to participate. The coffee was delicious and I learned a lot. I would definitely go back. Highly recommended.

It was a fun experience getting to know a lot more about coffee. I feel more knowledgeable about what type of coffee I can choose. Definitely recommend it for coffee lovers!

If you love coffee, you 'll truly enjoy Lorren's presentation. 2 hours went by fast. Even if you are not crazy about coffee, you ' ll learn how to appreciate it, and find the best way to brew it that will be best for your taste. For me I realized that the French press worked best. ( nothing to do with the fact that I am french!)
