Чем вы займетесь

On this virtual walk, we will explore Seattle's most famous land alteration project: the complete removal of a hill in the downtown area. Through a series of illustrations and maps and historic photos, we'll virtually cover about 1.5 miles circumnavigating the old hill in the area known as the Denny Regrade, where Amazon's campus is now located. Along the walk, we'll learn about how and why early Seattleites undertook this audacious and ambitious project, which they completed between 1897 and 1930. We'll also see clues in the landscape that allow you to visualize Denny Hill as well as see historic images to better understand the story.

Hi. I’m David Williams, a member of the Atlas Obscura community.

I am an award-winning author who has been leading walking tours around Seattle for more than 15 years. My books weave together the human and natural histories of Seattle and its surrounding areas. They include Too High and Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle's Topography, Seattle Walks: Discovering History and Nature in the City, The Seattle Street-Smart Naturalist, and Waterway: The Story of Seattle's Locks and Ship Canal. This virtual walk is based on what I learned writing those books.

I have already recommended to my co-workers for professional development and as a person who has lived in Seattle for years I was so impressed with how he moved through time and space to make it feel like a real tour.

Wow! As someone who grew up in the Seattle area, I was surprised I didn't know about this. David's presentation went way above and beyond what I expected. Highly recommended!!

I really enjoyed Dave and his very engaging and informative talk, and learned quite a bit: some of Seattle's early history and its ambition; something of the impact of its geography and geology; about how you flatten a city that is nothing but big steep hills and why you would—and lots more. The city looks different to me now that I understand those things better. Dave's a very likeable and knowledgeable storyteller, choosing historical and modern photos and maps well to enhance his narrative. I'm looking forward to his next "tour." And the one after that. And the one after that.

This was a unique look into Seattle's past and the creation of what has become part of the business district. We sure have come a long way in understanding environmental impacts.

David was a good host and the tour focuses on the natural history of this area. The material is very digestible and I learned something interesting!
