Чем вы займетесь

This is a 3.5 mile Run Tour at a conversational pace. The tour will traverse Howard University and the U street neighborhood exploring the people and places that gave birth to the prosperous entertainment scene of U Street affectionately known as “Black Broadway”. Along the way you’ll hear jazz music from the turn of the century featuring notable artists such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Pearl Bailey and of course the hometown icon Duke Ellington. The tour will highlight the importance of the nearby proximity of Howard University in educating generations of notable black professionals who would eventually be patrons to the thriving entertainment scene, as well as the civil rights fight for equality. Ben Ali (Ben’s Chili Bowl), Stokley Carmichael, Thurgood Marshall are some of the business owners and civil rights leaders to emerge from Howard U. On U Street we’ll learn more about the visionaries, businesses and entertainment venues that were crucial to shaping “Black Broadway” and how the pride and dignity born out of this area helped to bridge the racial divide, in DC and across the nation.

Richard

I am an architect and local tour guide with Artful Pace. I got bitten by the running bug several years ago and have ran in a variety of races ever since, from 5Ks to marathons. I use running for exercise, quiet reflection, and to soak in the sights and sounds of DC. I also enjoy studying the rich history, architectural diversity and cultural essence of DC, particularly it's African American heritage. My tours are designed to be wellness oriented to engage the body and mind.
